What are Vitamix Legacy Models and Why Does the Name Matter?

With the introduction of the new Ascent models, Vitamix created the name Legacy models to describe all C-Series and G-Series machines. This creates essentially three main categories of machines:  Vitamix Legacy models, Vitamix Ascent models, and Vitamix S-Series (or personal blender) models.

All of the different names for Vitamix models can be confusing, so I created this chart to help you figure out if your machine is one of the Vitamix Legacy models:

Vitamix Legacy Models

Models that are “Vitamix Legacy Models, but aren’t C-Series, or G-Series machines:

These are “unique” models that don’t fit into any normal category. The 20 oz. adapter kit will work on all 4 models below.  I don’t like or recommend these models over a Standard or a Next Generation model:

TurboBlend 2-Speed – No Variable Speed Control.  I consider Variable Speed Control to be essential!
Vitamix 6000 – Only has 6 timed settings.  No Variable Speed Control, and no High/Low setting.

I do recommend these model under certain circumstances which I go over when I am helping people decide which Vitamix will work best for their unique needs and budget.

Vitamix 5300 – This is listed both in the chart above, and here because it is a unique configuration combining a Standard motor base with a Next Generation container.  Vitamix considers it to be a Standard model and includes it in their list of C-Series Vitamix machines.
Vitamix 6500 – This model is listed both in the chart above, and here because it is a unique configuration combining a Standard motor base with a Next Generation container.  Vitamix considers it to be a Standard Programs model, and includes it in their list of C-Series Vitamix machines.

Why does the name “Vitamix Legacy models” matter?

The primary reason anyone would need to know if their machine was a Legacy model is to know if they need to buy an Adapter kit to use a 20 oz. personal blender container.  Each category (Vitamix Legacy models, Vitamix Ascent models, and Vitamix S-Series models) use a different blade assembly to attach to the 20 oz container cups.

In order to use a 20 oz Container Cup:

Legacy models require the purchase of a “personal adapter”.

Ascent models require the purchase of a “20 oz. Blending Cup Starter Kit” designed specifically for the Ascent machines.

S-Series models come with a 20 oz. container in the box with the machine. That blade assembly only works on an S-Series motor base.

  1. Hi

Just purchased the 6500 but I am thinking of returning it for a 3500 because like the face that the clear lid clicks and is compatible with the smaller containers. For salsa and smoothie jar.Not sure if the 6500 can use those cars. Or maybe I should keep what I have and purchase the 32oz jar

  4. Looking to purchase either a Pro 750 or the Ascent 3500. What are your benefits over purchasing from Vitanix directly or Williams Sonoma?

  5. Which model do you recommend for making baby food, milling flour, making nut milks/butters etc? We are a small family of 2 adults and a 5month old, but we would be using this on a daily basis.
    Thank you

  6. Hi, the 6500 actually has 2.2 hp motor. I’ve seen the packaging in Costco or Bed Bath & Beyond. Does that mean it has the same (better) motor as the next generation?

  7. Hello,

Thank you for the world of information on Vitamix blenders.

Based on the information I gathered online and from calling Vitamix, I was under the impression that the 5300C is basically the same at the 6500 but without presets. So, two days after having bought my 6500, I returned to Costco to get the 5300 and a 48 ounce wet container. To me, it made more sense to have a smaller wet container since I don’t need the presets. I bought it to grind caramelised hazelnuts/almonds because every other machine is not grinding this mixture into a smooth enough texture in my opinion.

Now, I am kind of regretting my return. The fit and finish of the 6500 is superiour to the 5300C. The motor housing plastic has some imperfections that are not present on the 6500. Moreover, the rubber finish on the two flip buttons on the 6500 is also of much better quality. And since they don’t have plastic finish on the extreme ends of the button, they don’t feel slippery at all when your fingers are wet.

I don’t know how important this information is, but some people may it useful. If budget was not issue for me, I would do the exchange again, and keep the extra wet container. Unfortunately, I need to decide between owning the 6500 and the 48 ounce wet container.
